“Art done the hard way”

Alamala (a Spanish palindrome which means “the hard way”) is Spanic Attack’s literary arm. Founded in 2000 as a micropress, and as an outlet for experimental art and literature from New York, Latin America and beyond, Alamala is interested in writing that is intelligent, passionate, irreverent and/or rebarbative; that is risky, overlooked or un-trendy; that sings of itself and of discerning masses. While open to innovative writing of all kinds, Alamala has a particular commitment to poetry and to hybrid essays and cultural criticism, as well as to experimental, performance-oriented, and multicultural texts.

Alamala’s approach is project-specific and based on author-publisher collaboration. In addition to various pamphlets and broadsides, Alamala has published the following full-length collections:

Urayoán Noel, Las flores del mall (poems, 2000; reprinted 2003)

JoMi Curet, De visita simples rutinas (poems, 2002; co-edition with Los Décimos Primeros)

A.B. Spellman, The Beautiful Days (poems, 2005; a new edition of the classic 1965 volume)

At present, Alamala publishes in English, Spanish, and all points in between.
